Re: what did Vince bring to the band? |
Folks, I need to take issue with this line of Vinny Bashing. True, Samba leaves me hitting the Next button, and following Brent is an almost impossible task. Actually, I think that he was just coming into his own as a player in the band. He was a remarkable keyboardist, though different than Brent, he actually acclimated earlier in his tenure, imho, than did Brent.
As to loving the Dead, or Jerry, this is in no doubt. He spent years post-Jerry trying to gain a foothold back into the fold. In fact, I'd venture to say that his already tenuous hold on his emotions were put over the edge by Jerry's death more than any other occurrence.

Re: what did Vince bring to the band? |
Not really Vince bashing...IMO the band was over at Brents death. I truly believe that the band continued solely to feed the monster it created out of a sense of obligation to the people they employed and the families they fed. By all accounts, the selection process to replace Brent was an extremely cavalier exercise, almost a joke. Brent's death was also clearly an emotional turning point for Garcia, who while playing very well with Grisman and JGB, showed very little enthusiasm for the Dead after Hornsby departed.
Though speaking with sarcasm, it's not far from the truth when saying Vince occupied the chair, and not much more. It's very unfortunate, even tragic, that his dedication to the band seemed to be a one way street.

Earl, your "sense" seems to dovetail precisely with what both Phil and Billy have said re the last 5 years of the band and reasons for continuing to tour. I always found it strange that Jerry could continue to play some great JGB shows and with Grisman, but that the GD shows were very painful (although I only saw a handful of GD after 89). He just did not seem to have his "heart" in it.
